Laura Mulvey

"Visual pleasure and narrative cinema"

The Male Gaze

Laura Mulvey coined the term 'Male Gaze' in 1975. She believes that the film audiences have to view characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male. During shots of a female the camera lingers on the curves of the woman's body, showing it in different proportions and angles. Also the camera shows events that occur to women and are presented largely in the context of the males reaction to these events. The female bodies are being viewed as objects and sexualised in their view.

The Male gaze is a term from a film theory. It is used to describe when the audience is put into the perspective of a (heterosexual) man. Female characters are sexualized, and the camera may zero in on female body parts considered sexual. The Male gaze is also a feminist theory in which displays the unbalanced differences between males and females. It reveals how men observe women, how women observe women and how women observe themselves.

Music Video Final Ideas

The Proclaimers (500 Miles)

As the final decision has been made to do a music video for The Proclaimers (500 Miles) me and my partner conducted a number of ideas together in which we presented to our class in our pitch.

Song chosen:

The Proclaimers "I'm Gonna Be" (500 Miles)

Name of "band":

Leth Aonan (Scottish term related to The Proclaimers as they were Scottish and twins. The term means 'Gemini' which also means 'Twins'.

Type of music video:

The video will be a Gag video with visual effects, it will be a very random video however some narrative will be put into it. (3 boys trying to get 1 girl into liking them - only one of them gets her in the end.)

Audience:

The audience that has been chosen for this music video is for a more teen generation, although The Proclaimers audience was aimed at the more older generation as it was in the 80's. We decided to change this purely because our idea concept relates more to the teen generation.

Genre:

The genre of The Proclaimers song (500 Miles) is Folk Pop/Celtic Rock. Alike artists to The Proclaimers would be the band Wet Wet Wet.

Mise-En-Scene:

Costume: The costumes going to be used in the music video are dresses for the boys and a suit like outfit for the girl.

Props: (transport) wheelchair, scooter, skateboard, rollerblades, uni-cycle etc. This is because it creates a humorous atmosphere for the viewers as the chorus for (500 Miles) is 'walk five hundred miles'. By using these different modes of transport it essentially shows irony.

Setting:

The setting will be in Bentley Priory and also a quiet country road.

Sunshine On Leith - Musical

Sunshine On Leith

Recently a trailer has been released for a Musical containing all of the Proclaimers songs which is due to be released as a film musical very soon! This has been convenient and coincidental for me and my partner as we have chosen to do The Proclaimers hit song (500 Miles). Below is the trailer:

"Sunshine on Leith is based on the sensational stage hit of the same name, featuring music by pop-folk band The Proclaimers. The film follows the stories of Davy and Ally, who have to re-learn how to live life in Edinburgh after coming home from serving in Afghanistan. Both struggle to learn to live a life outside the army and to deal with the everyday struggles of family, jobs and relationships."

Music Video Idea - The Proclaimers "I'm Gonna Be" - (500 Miles)

An idea for my music video that I feel will uphold originality and uniqueness is the song by The Proclaimers - 500 miles.

"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"
When I wake up, well, I know I'm gonna be I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out, yeah, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
If I get drunk, well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver, hey, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm working, yes, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you
When I come home (When I come home), oh, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old, well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

Da lat da (Da lat da), da lat da (Da lat da)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da
Da lat da (Da lat da), da lat da (Da lat da)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da

When I'm lonely, well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's lonely without you
And when I'm dreaming, well, I know I'm gonna dream
I'm gonna dream about the time when I'm with you
When I go out (When I go out), well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
And when I come home (When I come home), yes, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home with you
I'm gonna be the man who's coming home with you

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

Da lat da (Da lat da), da lat da (Da lat da)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da
Da lat da (Da lat da), da lat da (Da lat da)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da
Da lat da (Da lat da), da lat da (Da lat da)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da
Da lat da (Da lat da), da lat da (Da lat da)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da

And I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

The Proclaimers are a Scottish band composed of identical twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid. They are best known for the songs "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", "Sunshine on Leith", "I'm On My Way" and "Letter from America". The band tours extensively throughout the world. They have released nine studio albums from 1987 until the present, as well as two compilation albums and a DVD. Their music to me is very unique and original and I felt that their song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" was the perfect choice for the A2 Music Video.

The Proclaimers were actually unknown to me to begin with but came across their music on YouTube. Since then I have been doing extensive research on the type of band they are. Also without noticing their song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" has been used in a variety of areas.

For example in the film "Pitch Perfect" which was released in 2012 in which one of the scenes the Proclaimers song was featured as a Mix-tape (below). The mix consists of David Guetta's - Titanium and the Proclaimers - 500 Miles. The Proclaimers song being featured within this hit film made a major impact on them as a band and allowed them to become more known across the globe.

There was even a Chipmunk version of the song on YouTube which was featured on a console game. (below). This also made The Proclaimers become more known musically as their hit song 500 Miles was being featured in a variety of different places.

The Proclaimers were even used in an advertisement for the major brand Tesco's! in which featured during Christmas 2012. (Below) Although the Proclaimers are not mainstream their hit song has been featured in different areas - Music, Film, Gaming and even TV Ads. The song is fun and lively which allows me to be able to be have a variety of different ideas in my Music Video.

Animals Preliminary

As part of my Preliminary my task was to make a Music Video of up to 30 seconds using Final Cut using the footage provided. Putting together a Music Video is not as simple as I imagined however I was able to get to grasps with cutting each shot to the beat of the Soundtrack ensuring that it all flowed accordingly. In the process of making this Music Video it involved listening to a Soundtrack of my choice provided and placing different footage into the timeline. It then involved using the marking on Final Cut to mark each time the beat was heard. This enabled me to cut each shot accurately to the beat as a result of the marking.

Below is my finished Animals Preliminary:

Music Video Analysis

Voyeurism

Voyeurism is the act of watching someone who is performing sexual behaviours such as dancing, undressing or intercourse in order to gain pleasure. The person being watch is often unaware of their audience and in terms of music videos it is usually the men's controlling gaze towards women that have been sexually objectified.

The music video for Sak Noel - Loca People is an example of Voyeurism. This is purely because as the music video is set in a nightclub with exotic dancers being the main attention of the video. Low angle shows, high angle shots etc have been used to convey Voyeurism.
